Evolution of Swine Flu Viruses Traced in Long-Term Study
In new research reported in Nature, scientists analyzed the genetic makeup of more than 650 influenza viruses isolated during the systematic surveillance of pigs slaughtered in Hong Kong between 1998 and 2010. When the investigators supplemented this information with additional data stretching back 34 years, they could discern when specific subtypes of flu virus—including strains that had previously infected only birds or humans—first appeared in Hong Kong swine.
Expanding DNA Database (Inmates)
Law enforcement officials are vastly expanding their collection of DNA to include millions more people who have been arrested or detained but not yet convicted. Fact Sheet: Cybersecurity Legislative Proposal
Our critical infrastructure – such as the electricity grid, financial sector, and transportation networks that sustain our way of life – have suffered repeated cyber intrusions, and cyber crime has increased dramatically over the last decade. The President has thus made cybersecurity an Administration priority. When the President released his Cyberspace Policy Review almost two years ago, he declared that the “cyber threat is one of the most serious economic and national security challenges we face as a nation.” The Administration has since taken significant steps to better protect America against cyber threats. FDA approves over the counter OraQuick HIV test
Government officials estimate one-fifth, or about 240,000 people, of the 1.2 million HIV carriers in the U.S. are not aware they are infected. Testing is one of the chief means of slowing new infections, which have held steady at about 50,000 per year for two decades. FDA officials said the test is aimed at people who might not otherwise get tested. A Q&A document for consumers, as well as labeling information, will be available on the FDA's official website by the end of the week.
